Transition to
Teaching is a
federally funded
program designed
to attract
mid-career
professionals
and recent
college
graduates to
fill vacancies
in critical
shortage areas
in high need
schools. The
program funds
alternative
certification
programs to help
participants
become highly
qualified
teachers.
Purpose:

Eligible
participants
will be prepared
to become
“highly
qualified” math
and science
teachers for the
identified high
need schools in
Tennessee. This
alternative
licensure
program will be
offered by the
University of
Tennessee at
Martin.
Who May
Apply?
Candidates who
have a
Bachelor’s
degree in
mathematics,
science,
engineering or
nursing are
eligible to
apply for the
Online
Alternative
Licensure
Program. A
minimum GPA of
2.5 is required.
Program
Description:
- Instruction
delivered
online with
a reduced
number of
course hours
required (15
semester
hours)
- Serve
as teacher
of record in
the fall and
receive full
salary
- Ongoing
professional
support
provided by
experienced
teachers who
are trained
to mentor
- Comp
training and
classroom
support
Requirements:
-
Bachelor’s
degree in
mathematics
or science
(Biology,
Chemistry,
Earth
Science,
Physics, or
related
area)
- Pass the
PRAXIS II
test in
specified
content area (refer to:
http://ets.org/praxis)
- Obtain
an intent to
hire from an
eligible
school
district
-
Sign a
letter of
commitment
to teach for
three years
in one of
Tennessee’s
identified
high need
public
middle or
high schools
Your
Commitment:
- Teach
in Tennessee
for three
years in a
public
school
- Complete
five graduate
classes with
a 3.0 GPA
- Complete
comp
training
- Engage
in active
collaboration
with a
mentor
- Repay
loan if you
do not pass
courses or
do not
fulfill 3
year
teaching
commitment
